Solix is a Sun 690MP computer that runs the UNIX operating system maintained by FIU for teaching and research purposes. It is a convenient host for web pages. In fact, if you have ever visited a web page with the address www.fiu.edu/~something, you have accessed a web page stored on SOLIX. Current FIU students can get an account on SOLIX, allowing them to post web pages.

Once you create a SOLIX account, you can use any FTP program (I now use FileZilla, a freeware program) to make directories and to upload and download files to SOLIX.

How to get a SOLIX account:

From any Windows PC with internet access:

        1. Click on "Start"

        2. Click on "Run"

        3. At the "Open:" window, enter: telnet solix.fiu.edu

Once connected to SOLIX, enter "UnixShell" at the "login:" prompt and follow the instructions on your screen.

Once you have signed on to username UnixShell, you will be asked to enter your student number, last name, first name, and middle initial if applicable. If you make a mistake in keying in this information, don't be alarmed, you may repeat the questionnaire by answering N to the question, "Is the information correct?". After you complete the questionnaire and indicate that the information is correct, the system will provide you with a username and password if you are eligible for one (you must be a current FIU registered student). Otherwise, the system will instruct you on what to do next.

After entering the above information, the "Agreement to Acquire a Computer Account" will be displayed on your screen. 

Read this very carefully. You must accept the terms and conditions of this agreement in order to acquire a computer account. 

If you accept the terms and conditions of the agreement, the following screen will appear:

Note: If you've recorded your username and password, and you wish to clear the screen, press the key. Otherwise, your screen will automatically go blank within 40 seconds.

Warning: Once you have acquired a username on the Unix systems, your files and username will remain in the system as long as you are enrolled in the current semester.
